Dubai Diaries

A Holy Quran Park and a Maritime Museum are among a dozen projects, 10 of which cost nearly Dh900 million, that are going to spiral the urban development in Dubai in the next few years, the Dubai Municipality has said.

The Director-General of the Dubai Municipality Hussain Nasser Lootah announced on Tuesday that most of the 10 projects, estimated to cost around Dh883.5 million, will be completed by the end of 2014.

These include the Dh150million Dubai Safari and the Dh120 million Dubai Frame projects that Lootah described as two ambitious tourism projects the municipality is confident of completing along with eight high-tech specialised markets across the different areas of the emirate. The move aims to decentralise the business activities to more spacious and comfortable places enabling the visitors of the emirate, tourists and residents meet their shopping requirements away from the traffic congestion of the city.

According to the municipality, Dubai is going to be a distinctive place in the world in terms of its amenities, services and balanced urban development meeting the expectations of growing population of over 200 nationalities for a peaceful life.

Among the market projects, the municipality has already completed the Al Fahidi Market, considered to be the first project in the emirate that completely applies green building specifications along with the use of solar energy system for lights, water heating and cooling.
Al Ayas Shopping Complex in Al Ayas area and a birds and animals market with unique features including a hotel for the pets, aimed to be one of the international tourist attractions in the country, will be completed by the middle of 2014.

Costing Dh50.5 million and spread across 27,000 square metres, the market resembles Souq Naif in Deira in terms of its traditional architecture. Allocating specific areas for different types of trade activities such as food, fabrics, toys, handicraft, traditional products and gold, the project also aims to promote small trade activities of the local community which do not require huge capital but create new job opportunities.

A traditional market in Hatta, which will showcase the deep-rooted traditional inheritances and help tourists enjoy the nature of Hatta, and an integrated truck market which will take away the trade of used trucks, heavy equipment and spare parts to the city’s outskirts in Al Ruwaya, are among the market projects that will be completed by the end of 2014.

By the middle of 2015, Dubai will receive a state-of-the art Dh250 million fish market sprawling an area of 120,000 square metres in Deira and a market for used furniture and antiques in Nad Al Sheba 3 area.

A boat and fishing market specially designed to be a global destination for all activities regarding manufacturing and exporting fishing boats, fishing tools and marine equipment, is expected to be completed in Al Barsha North 1 by this September.

In addition to these ten projects, there are some other unique projects like Holy Quran Park and Maritime Museum which are still under the initial stages of design and other preparations, the municipality said.

Its good to see that Brand Dubai is taking up a cautious and diversified approach this time around. Real Estate Prices in Dubai grew at approx. 18.3% from financial year March 2012 – March 2013 (Source: Arabian Business)

Continuing on the path laid out by the visionary leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister, Vice President of the United Arab Emirates & ruler of Dubai.
As a child growing up in the 80s I always thought that Dubai was a city in India with the then tallest structure The Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) built in 1978 standing at 149 meters used to pain our necks. It sure has come a long way.
When the recession hit the world in late 2008 after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, most newspapers had similar doomsday articles claiming that the glorious days of sunshine in Dubai were over. Property prices had fallen by more than 60% while steel prices worldwide were down by more than 75%

But there was only one bold-against-the-tide news article that I remember clearly saying that Dubai has just taken a break like an athlete who has been running for far too long. And once the athlete is well rested & refreshed no one can stop him from winning.

Recently His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum had said that Dubai is just 10% of where it wants to be. I found this statement odd & surprising. But when I asked a high-ranking government official at a VIP property launch event, the meaning of the above statement, he said Dubai is only 41 years old while the developed economies of New York & London are 400+ years old, so automatically Dubai is at a modest 10% of where it wants to be.

Whoaa, I just love the spirit of this awe-inspiring world-class-ultra-neat city :)
