Movie Review: Dhoom 3 (2013)

by Pawan Manghnani on December 22nd, 2013

No Spoilers Review of Dhoom 3:

D3 is a Hindi action thriller film, written and directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya and produced by Aditya Chopra. It is the third installment of the Dhoom series. Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra reprise their roles as Jai Dixit and Ali Akbar while Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif being the antagonist duo. Believed to be one of the most expensive Indian films of all times at an approximate costing of INR 125 Crore + (1 USD = 62 INR).  Dhoom 3 was released on 20 December 2013 being the first Bollywood movie to be released in the IMAX (Image Maximum) format. It opened in 3 languages, Hindi, Tamil & Telugu and on a record 4500+ screens (Including 750+ screens in the international market) which is the highest for any Hindi movie.

The Dhoom Series have always been about style & heists which gets better with every installment. Probably the only series, where I support the VILLIAN with all my heart.
Marketing was unconventional and was kept to the bare minimum with low-key promotions. Only 30 second song promos were released on YouTube & TV as they wanted the audiences to experience the songs in its full glory. A risky bet, considering YRF & Aamir are considered marketing geniuses in their own right. But, it made me focus on every little detail even in the songs. The songs will grow on you especially now, after seeing the entire video. I feel the movie would have a wider appeal & connect with the audiences had the songs been released in its entirety. My favorite song of the lot is the Majestic looking "Dum Malang Malang" which is the most expensive song to be shot at INR 5 Crore+ (Entire low budget movies are shot with this budget) The background score was exhilarating in theme with the high-octane action. All in all music director, Pritam has done a fabulous job with some fresh & melodious tunes.

Arz Kiya Hai: Bande hai hum uske, humpe kiska zor, Logic dhundne jaoge, ho jaoge bore!
People trying to find logic in a Hindi movie is like searching for True Love. You WON'T find it. Its Extinct Boss. And surprisingly, the same people are okay with the logic of Rs 100 Crore + Grossers which include Prabhu Deva, Rohit Shetty, Salman & SRK's senseless & script-less films..?
~Aamir Khan is such a joy to watch. Got completely immersed in his flawless acting. In Bollywood, No one comes close to this hard-working genius of a perfectionist. Every frame with him in it was a visual TREAT. A gift to the hardcore Aamir fans considering this was his first commercial film after 4 years of offbeat cinema (Dhobi Ghaat, Talaash). His movies are no less than a festival. FANtastic.
~Whistle, Katrina can dance like no other. What she can't do with Hindi dialogue delivery she makes it up in her dances, her hard work really does show.
~Abhishekh's role has been cut down with every subsequent Dhoom but he holds his scenes decently well except the fake beards.
~Uday Chopra was passable, with thankfully, limited screen time.
VFX wise, Something Ra.One & Krrish 3 tried was upgrading the special effects  and action sequences to Hollywood levels, but found very limited success, Dhoom 3 has upped the ante for other production houses. I agree what they did with the action sequences was illogical, but it LOOKED smooth & possible. That’s what Visual Effects are supposed to do ! And would anyone question the action sequences of a James Bond or a Ethan Hunt (Mission Impossible) ?

With the type of movies Bollywood has been churning out off late, a movie which you can watch with your entire family together is a rarity. Full marks for keeping it clean & family friendly.

The running time of the film is is quite long at 172 minutes. Had they trimmed it by 20-25 minutes (especially the flashback scenes), it would have been:
a) Slicker
b) Generated more revenue (additional INR 60-70 Crores lifetime business) as they could squeeze in 1 more show per screen per day
But I understand the predicament of the producers, that millions of dollars was spent on each scene & toning it down would have been extremely difficult.

The cinematography captures the essence of expansive Chicago locales beautifully well. Chase sequences are top-notch for a Hindi film. Kept us glued to the seats. Every frame looks like, money has been well spent & oh-so-lavishly.  Aditya Chopra has (successfully) made sure Writer / Director Vijay Krishna Acharya's vision is bought to life in a manner of pure opulence & grandiose.

I absolutely loved the movie in all its cinematic glory & without succumbing to peer pressure, have expressed my own views here. Sure haters will hate & everyone is entitled to their own viewpoint. But would love to see the critics try and outdo even 50% of what Aamir as an actor & YRF as a producer have achieved.
Aur jinko movie nahi pasand aayi:
