Jaan at the Penthouse - Sofitel Downtown

JAAN AT THE PENTHOUSE is a progressive Indian cuisine restaurant, the brainchild of Chef & Owner Farrokh Khambata. Drawing inspiration from the finest produce from the Japan, Far East and Europe, their chef team has created mind blowing combinations to raise the expectations of Dubai's dining scene to another level.

JAAN boasts spectacular views of the Dubai coastline & epic views of the Burj Khalifa which is a an added attraction.


​We were ecstatic to be invited to Jaan At The Penthouse, because despite of it opening its doors to the public like 2-3 weeks ago, it had already made waves with people raving about the gastronomy and the ambiance. For us, when we entered we already has SUCH high hopes, and we were glad that nothing about our experience disappointed us. 

Entering a place on the rooftop of Sofitel Downtown has to picturesque, sure, but what caught our attention the most was the neon pink sign board! The ambiance is very classy with the place divided into a smoking and non smoking section. There is an open kitchen which I personally love, just to see the cooks in action! 

Extra special mention to the amazing staff on the floor. We had, with us a toddler on the table that night and the entire staff and even the chef were courteous enough to accommodate the baby’s food needs. It was something that struck a chord with us and we genuinely really appreciated it! 


JAAN brings to the diner a unique concept of using the best produce the world has to offer and infusing these ingredients with exotic herbs, flavorings and spices, keeping in line with India’s gastronomic heritage. We had a set menu, with a choice of cocktails and mocktails to begin with and our very helpful and cheerful guided us with them! 


Smoking Cosmo:

Literally like a regular cosmo, but served in glass that mimics a smokers pipe and it had some dry ice in it for the "smoking" element! It was same but different, and the fact that you consume the drink like you would be smoking a pipe was pretty cool and fancy. My wife was impressed. 
Seven Minutes In Heaven:

This was my choice and was a mix of champagne and elder flower, and contrary to my belief of it just being a glass of champagne, it had some infused flavours and fragrances that changed the taste completely and for the better! I do recollect luxuriating in every sip of it! 
There were couple of more drinks, one gin based and one scotch based, both of which I have forgotten the fancy names of, but what I do remember is that they were EXTREMELY potent, and definitely worth your money, and not to forget- Delicious too! 


Life of Nemo:
Kuromaguro blue fin tuna.. busto style, spiced dashi condiment.

​Full points to the presentation, team Jaan! Chunks of tuna served on a fish bowl, with live fishes inside. A treat to the eyes as well as the the taste buds. The toddler was super excited looking at it as well and actually let us eat the perfectly marinated Japanese favourite! 
Big Head Prawns:
Indian Butter Garlic Style

These came on a skewer with all the meat intact in the shell almost glued to garlic-y cheese that had melted on top. To eat, these were without a doubt a pure delight! 
Hunter’s Poussin:
clay oven cooked young chicken supremes with basil and cumin

Chicken makes my wife happy, and in this case even our team who joined us for the dinner that night. Subtle flavours with the chicken marinated with spices and clay oven baked. A good appetite option and we appreciated the fact that the portions were well thought of for an extensive set menu!
​Kokkaido Mushrooms and Truffle Kofta:
erring.. reishi.. shitake.. truffle kofta a savoury ball

We had a vegetarian on our team so, she eagerly waited for her turn to eat some goodness. Like it mentions on the menu it was indeed a kofta served on a sauce of some kind, that just enhanced the truffle infused mushroom filling. Classic with a twist.   
​Dhaba Highway Restaurant Butter Chicken:
Hand pulled butter chicken. classic style

The presentation of this dish was just too cute not to smile cheekily, but what was even better was the main dish itself. A complete cracker, it out did any good butter chicken we may have consumed in Dubai. We are certainly craving for more and will make our way back like super soon. 
Sizzling Chole Hommus with Amritsari Kulcha:
a hummus with whole chickpeas and punjabi spices. stuffed and leavened breakfast bread.

I mean, what could one do different with chole right? But the chef completely surprised us when the it was served on a sizzling platter with a side of its own set of bread stuffed with a potato filling, commonly know as an Amritsari kulcha! The consistency of the whole was a bit thick and we assumed it was because of the hummus element added to it. It definitely tasted nothing like we have eaten before! 
Kashmir ke Gucci whole Himalayan Truffle:
Clay oven smoked and spiked, quinoa and truffle churned butter rise

Pulao, but not just any pulao. This was pulao doused in Truffle butter which obviously took it to a whole another level! 
​Jaan Bread Basket:
Consisted of roomaali rotis, garlic butter naan and plain flat breads.
Normandie Dairy Dal:
black dal enhanced with the world’s best cream and butter

One of the most creamiest and tastes dal makhani ever! We don’t know what the cream component used was but it did enhance the flavours as opposed to dulling it. We felt our belts getting tighter with every bite we took. #caloriesgalore


​French Toast Shahi Tukda:
maple cinnamon squeeze, almandine kulfi a milk reduction ice cream

Gobsmacked. That is what we were when we took a bite of this amazing looking dessert! It almost felt like a filled donut, but better. A LOT better. The filling was cheese of some sort that complimented the toast bit of the dish. Also, alongside we were served a kulfi shaped like an ice cream candy. A bit too frozen for out liking but super cute! 
Saffron panna cotta, thandai mousse, raspberry pour

Sliced like butter, this pannacotta has got to be a part of your “must try” lists in Dubai. Perfect consistency with the just the right amount of sweetness intact. The raspberry coulis was just what kind of was missing to completely the pannacotta as a dessert! One of my absolute favourite!

​Go, run, make your bookings right now! This has to be your new IT spot for all those kittens and parties and celebrations that are up an coming! Dining here is an experience of a kind, and food with literally blow your mind. Calories that need to be eaten because you wont be able to put the fork down. If you are really the sale types, just go for the kickass cocktails and desserts, and it will still be worth it! Oh, and if by chance you are feeling a bit cold at the restaurant, they are kind enough to offer you a pashmina that is hot pink, to soothe that cold! Not, bad at all!
